Barbara Mathes Gallery will present an exhibition of landscape paintings, entitled The Poetic Landscape, from July - September 2000.
The exhibition will include works by modern and contemporary artists including Milton Avery, Richard Diebenkorn, Helen Frankenthaler, Maureen Gallace, Pat de Groot, Alex Katz, Georgia O'Keeffe, Fairfield Porter, Jon Schueler, Serse and Hiroshi Sugimoto.
The serene paintings in this exhibition reflect the relaxed atmosphere of summer and illustrate the many meanings and poetic language of the natural landscape. The works refer to a variety of landscapes, both imagined and real. Paintings by Fairfield Porter and Maureen Gallace transport the viewer to the lakes in Maine and the Cape Cod beaches. Gallace presents a world that is at first appears calming, but then seems awkward in its skewed perspective and isolated houses. Pat de Groot focuses on the ever-changing seascapes near her home in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Jon Schueler's work represents the small Scottish fishing village of Mallaig, while Helen Frankenthaler explores the mass of landscape through abstraction and color.
